Wasabi Nami Japanese Restaurant, Medan

Conveniently situated right in the heart of Medan town center, on the 6th floor of Capital Building, stylish, comfortable and inviting ambience best describe this eatery. The tables layout are spread around several section of the restaurant giving that cozy feel to the place and include 2 private dining rooms for those who like it to be personalized. Hence the place is one of the ideal few restaurants in Medan for groups dining, parties and business lunches or dinners.
There is also a full size Tepanyaki table in one corner for Tepanyaki and grilled Japanese food lovers.

Unagi Roll
Though the food choices from the main menu are rather limited, it does have the basic of many Japanese dishes that is well priced. Have a try at the Unagi roll that is served on a hot sizzling plate, giving that warm soft texture of the eel served.

Unfortunately, the food is not the true authentically Japanese kind, well, none of the Japanese restaurant in Medan does serve it anyway. I would recommend the place for nice quick lunch or an easy dinner before heading towards the Retro Pub just right next door. In terms of service, staff are attentive, prompt and courteous. Meals for two is at approximately Rp 300.000.

Sad to learn there are only 5 Japanese restaurants in Medan. A far cry campared with Jakarta. Anybody knows which of the 5 restaurants serve tonkatsu?
Tonkatsu is a common Japanese dish, you should be able to find them in most Japanese restaurant
Never visitted Japanese restaurants in Medan but in Jakarta it is not so easy to get tonkatsu because most Japanese, Chinese and Korean restaurants make their food halal especially those located in malls. It is easy to get beef katsu or chicken katsu but it is not the case for tonkatsu.
Thanks for reminding me. Tonkatsu = Pork
Always mixed up with KatsuDon which is usually served as Chicken Katsudon in Indonesia
Yes, ton means pork. When you order katsudon in Japan (I graduated from an university in Tokyo and has travelled to several places in Japan), the meat topped over the rice is automatically tonkatsu. The same thing applies to Japanese restaurants in Taipei, Hongkong, Macau, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur which I have ever visitted. Indonesia is unfortunately an exception. That’s why when I went to Medan this February, I chose to eat Chinese hawker foods because I could easily get pork and the Medanese hawker food is the BEST in Indonesia.
Where are you based now Kenji? Interesting how Medanese have traveled, studied and live abroad.
And thank you for visiting MedanKu.com and contributing your experiences with us.
I live in Manado now and am not a Medanese. Maybe you will be surprised to know the main purpose I went to Medan February this year is for tasting and taking the photos of Whore Rice (Nasi Lonte) and Kwetiauw Shen Tien Shia. I was an active member of www. sendokgarpu.com until the end of May 2009 (stopped as I don’t like the new moderator). These 2 Medanese dishes have been mentioned many times at the forum but nobody there knew how those 2 dishes looked like. Curious, I went to Medan via Kuala Lumpur by Air Asia (cheaper than via Jakarta as I didn’t have to pay Fiskal)
.
Below are my articles on Nasi Lonte and Kwetiauw Shen Tien Shia. Maybe interesting for Medanese to see how a Manadonese explore Medanese food in Medan.

Cool! Can we have your permission to post them at MedanKu.com and MedanTalk.com?
Of course! I am very glad you will do that. And please mind that when I said: “Medanese hawker food is the BEST in Indonesia” in my earlier post in this thread, that is the comment from a non-Medanese.
Thank you for your contribution to MedanKu.com Kenji,
by the way, if it is not too much to ask, since you are well spoken in English,
could you write your review for the food posts in English for us for MedanKu.com.
We could translate it but, it will be better if it is from you.
We will post the Bahasa version in MedanTalk.com
Thank You!
Okay, I’ll translate those 2 articles when I have more time. But I don’ t have access to post them here. So I just send them to your email address and you post them later?
Sure Kenji, just email us when the post is ready.

Hi Iwao,
No, I am not a Japanese. The name (Kenji) was given by one of my teachers when I attended a Japanese language school in Tokyo because it was hard for him to pronounce my Indonesian name.
Yes, as you said, when we order katsudon or katsujyu in Japan, the fried breaded meat which topped over rice together with egg and vegetable is usually pork (tonkatsu).
