Tipping is up to each individual. If you think they have give you a good service, by all means tip them as it may help them in some way. At least they can make some extras as their salary can only last for the month. There is nothing wrong tipping them even though a 10% service is added to the bill.

No Problem Edward.

Every year around January - February, the Department of labor / manpower of Indonesia (DepNaker) will issue a letter to employers from the Minister (Menteri Tenaga Kerja) with regard to the standard minimum wage set for the year.

You may also request it from them.

The standards are different for each city of Indonesia and for different sectors of the industry. It ranges from 5% - 10% difference for each type of industry.

I dont think there is an official statistics for this.

Thanx,

This is solid information. How did you get the standard minimum wage by the way? I am looking for stats about Medan. Is there an official agency for that (e.g. in the Netherlands we have the CBS - Central Bureau for Statistics)?

Yes, you are right.
Tips are not expected in cheaper restaurants.
Tips = Service = Tips
No service = No Tips :-)

As for the tour guides, if you went for private tours, some will ask for it indirectly, so it really depends on yourself. Larger group tours may not experience this problem.

I don't think you should give any tips in normal cheaper restaurants. It is not expected.

It is not necessary to tip tour guides either. They are well paid by Indonesian standards. You can give them a tip if you want to, but it is not usual, and they should certainly NEVER ask for it (a difference with say USA, is that some Indonesians who meet a lot of tourists start ASKING for tips. This is rude behaviour in any country, and you should not give them money).
