Medan International Airport at Kuala Namu North Sumatra Indonesia
Want a glimpse of the new Medan International Airport?
Medan’s new airport is long overdue. The current Medan Polonia Airport is one of the busiest airport in Indonesia and yet smaller and older than many airports in Indonesia. I once visited Padang - a town much smaller than Medan and surprisingly, it has a newer and modern airport compared to Medan.
You will understand what I mean when you land in Medan where passengers still have to take the stairs up and down the plane.
Yes, we do not have the hangars that we can walk to the planes from the terminal like many airports in the world. ( ehm.. except for the latest budget terminals in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur etc that were specifically built for the budget airlines )
Medan was supposed to build the Kuala Namu Airport to replace Polonia Airport before the 1997 economic crisis and the project was delayed until recently.
Here’s a video by Air Transport Authority of Indonesia ( Departmen Perhubungan Udara Republik Indonesia ), PT. Angkasa Pura Schipol, PT. Hasfarm Dian Konsultan and PT. LAPI Ganeshatama Consulting of a 3D simulation of the new Airport building at Kuala Namu
Hopefully, the next time you visit Medan ( 2009-2010 ) , we can welcome you with our new Airport at Kuala Namu ![]()

Medan Polonia Airport on Fire Update
You will be glad to know that Garuda Airlines and Lion Air Domestic Flights Fly from International terminal at Medan Polonia Airport.
Last week, the domestic terminal at Medan Polonia Aiport caught fire and all domestic flights passengers have to check in under tents outside the domestic terminal. It is a chaotic and confusing for all passengers not to mention the discomfort of the weather condition etc.
The photo below shows the current condition of Medan Domestic terminal.

Luckily, Garuda Airlines and Lion Air now flies from the international terminal to ease the traffic from the emergency domestic terminal and providing more convenience and comfort for passengers. I bet, these two airlines pay more for the move
The domestic terminal is now under plan for rebuilding a temporary 8000m2 building that will cost Rp40 billion equivalent to about US$4.4 million. For now, we are still waiting for our new international airport to start construction at Kuala Namu.
Medan Airport Lounge Secrets

Traveling Secrets - Tips in Medan Airport Lounge
No more queues and Free internet access
I was traveling to Jakarta from Medan today and can confirm with you that the airport lounges in Medan are valid for credit cards issued from Indonesia only - be it Citibank or HSBC, if it is issued in Indonesia, you can use it to access the airport lounge for FREE.
This is great for Indonesia credit card holders as we can enjoy such facilities for Free. Best part is, as I mentioned in my earlier post, if you use the domestic flight airport, there are currently 2 lounges in the airport. I would suggest you use the one found on the right. Right beside the entrance. As I found out today, you can even check in from there and pay your airport tax at the lounge counter, saving you the time and hassle of queuing up to purchase airport tax and then to the check in counter - oh by the way this only applies if you do not have check in lunggage.
This lounge is smaller than the main lounge inside the main terminal, but it less busy as not many people know about it. Honestly I could be selfish and keep this to myself so that I can enjoy this facility on my own, but hey since you are my reader, I might as well share this with you.
As for the international terminal, the tip for you is if you have a laptop and need internet access, you may ask the “key - password” from the counter to access the wifi connection. They do not publicize this but now you know you can do that. This is not applicable to domestic terminal nor even the Jakarta airport lounges! You will need to purchase a voucher credit for wifi access.
And by the way, there are 2 PCs with internet connection in the international terminal for you to use. Not many people are aware of this as it is hidden in a corner near the restrooms.
