Many visitors are still unsure of the exact location of Medan and have asked Where is Medan?

We have just finished compiling Places of Interests in Medan in Google Maps. You can browse and surf the map of Medan.

However, please be warned that Google’s Map of Medan is 2 years out of date!

Here’s the proof:

Sun Plaza and Medan Fair is still an empty land in Google Maps of Medan as you can see the pictures below which are taken today. So do not expect to find the view or buildings of new developments in Medan such as The Grand Palladium Mall, The Aston International Hotel, The Swiss Bel Hotel, The Cambridge Mall, The Crystal Square, The JW Marriott Hotel etc.

This is the main reason why we have compiled the map with placemarks of these places. So dont be shock to see placemarks that read “Grand Palladium Shopping Mall” on an empty land!

Has Google lost Medan?

Where is Medan?

I was searching on Medan in Google today and saw a funny image at the top which is supposed to be a map of Medan Indonesia. However, the image does not look like Medan at all.

Curious I clicked on the link and searched further, and finally things become clearer as I zoom out of the map and use the satellite view function. and… Medan is FOUND on Google Maps!

Yap, we do have a small airport which is long overdue for a replacement. Hopefully we will see the new airport at Kuala Namu soon but be warned as it will not be in the city any more and more traveling time will be needed. For now, we can still enjoy a 15-30 minutes drive to airport from the city but have to put up with the lack of facilities at the Medan Polonia International Airport.

Here is the map of Medan and North Sumatra, you can see Lake Toba too also known as Danau (Lake) Toba. The Sumatra Lake is the largest crater lake in the world. Also in the map, you can see the island of Nias - a very popular surf boarding (surfing) tourist destination. People from all over the world travel to Medan and to Nias for surf boarding as to get to Nias, the nearest airport is Medan.

Polonia International Airport is one of the main gates to Medan North Sumatra Indonesia . This airport serves the flights to big cities in:
* Indonesia , like Jakarta , Batam, Pekan Baru
* Kuala Lumpur , Penang and Ipoh in Malaysia
* Singapura
* Taipei in Taiwan

Because of it position is too close to city center, about 2 km, this airport prompted the restrictions and limitation for the levels of the buildings in Medan .

There are few tall buildings in Medan that trespassed this regulations. Besides that, this airport also predicted already or almost overload. Since flighs permission to pass by in Indonesia is lenient in year 2000, the number of flight that served in Polonia is increased drastically.

Therefore, this airport in the next few years will be move to Kuala Namu, Deli Serdang Regency area.
