Medan Fair Exhibition

Medan Fair 2008 ( Trade Expo ) will showcase information, promotion of products and services from Medan at Kompleks Tapian Daya PRSU Jl. Gatot Subroto, Medan from 05 December 2008 to 21 December 2008.

Organized by PT Star Indonesia, Medan Fair is an annual event and trade show which has seen the largest trasactions in Sumatera Utara and especially in Kota Medan.

The event promotes the growth of Medan, its culture and the best products and producer of North Sumatra. There will also be recreational events in the expo including performances by Indonesian artists, dances from the locals such as poco-poco, karaoke, and even barongsai (lion dance).

The products that are on show with 265 exhibitors includes products from local small and medium sized companies and industries, corporations, binaan BUMD dan BUMN, agriculture, forestry, fishery, farming, mining, agrobisnis, automotive, electronics, computer, multimedia and more.

The Medan Fair trade show starts daily from 16:00 WIB to 22.00 WIB on weekdays 10.00 WIB to 22.00 WIB on public holidays. 05 December 2008 to 21 December 2008

Want to see the latest computer technology in Medan?

Heaven for computer geeks. Every 3 - 6 months, there will always be a computer fair held in Medan, usually in Plaza Medan Fair or at Sun Plaza.

It is usually recommended to shop around when purchasing computers or laptop and bringing all these brands of computers together under one roof makes it convenient for customers to test and shop around for the best bargains.

Sun Plaza Medan

This time, the fair is at the atrium of Sun Plaza and will be held for 5 days from 13 November to 17 November 2008.

To spice things up, there is also a daily lucky draw with a Motor Bike as the prize plus Auction everyday from 7.30 PM. The price will start at Rp50.000 including notebook Byon, pendrive HDD external, Speaker Hyundai etc.

When you come to Medan, you may want to go shopping for some local food or clothing in Medan. We are listing several popular shopping spots here:

Sun Plaza Medan

This is currently the most popular shopping plaza in Medan. Sun Plaza opened in 2005, was the latest development of Malls after Indonesia Monetary Crisis in 1998. Built almost 10 years after the last development of plaza in Medan which is Medan Mall built in 1995.

Located at Jalan Zainul Arifin also known to Medan as the area of “Kampung Keling” ( Little India ) is very near to Jalan Diponegoro where many banks are located.

Sun Plaza currently filled with many choices of tenants from local, national and international chains.

Sun Plaza Tenants range from Sogo Department Store, Ace Hardware, Index Furnishings, Hyper Mart, Star Bucks, JCO Donuts, Bread Talk, Bread Life, Baskin Robbins Ice Cream, KFC, Acer Computers, Toshiba Computers, Frank & Co jewelry, Studio 21 Cinemas, Optics, Seoul Garden, Timezone, Paparons Pizza , GameSpot for gamers, Planet Sports, Kids Station for toys Sports Warehouse, BodyShop, Osim Health, Next Clothing, Pizza Hut, Nelayan Restaurant, Fountain Ice Cream among others.

Medan Fair Plaza

Plaza Medan Fair, built after Sun Plaza on the land of Medan’s previous family entertainment park “Taman Ria” at Jalan Gatot Subroto has a large shopping area. The previous plan had apartments and hotels above the mall in phase two of the development but we have not seen this developed until now.

This has more local shops without cinema but has a wide range of IT and mobile phone shops including many choices of restaurants and cafes and a Carrefour and Matahari Department Store.

Grand Palladium Mall

Grand Palladium Mall is built after Plaza Medan Fair next to Kantor Walikota ( Authority Office of Medan ) and opposite of Lapangan Benteng ( Large field for events ) This mall consist of smaller shops and boutiques including many IT and mobile phones related shops plus Matahari Department Store, TimeZone games for children, HyperMart and Cinema.

Not to forget, there is also a 5 star hotel above - The Aryaduta Hotel Medan.

Along the same road, you will also find Aston International Hotel Medan and Merdeka Walk

Medan Mall

Medan Mall built in 1995 at Jalan MT Haryono Medan was the latest development of malls before Indonesian monetary crisis in 1998.

Situated in the heart of the city with the wholesale center connected behind this mall, it is one of the busiest mall for businesses and visitors from suburbs of Medan. With many gold jewelers on the first floor, Macan Yaohan Supermarket on second, Matahari Department Store on third and fourth plus, KFC, Gramedia Book Store, Body Shop, Giordano Clothing, Polo, Batik Shop among other local shops.

The main attraction should be the wholesale kiosk right behind the mall which is connected to the mall.

Thamrin Plaza

Thamrin Plaza is an earlier plaza built around 1990s in Medan, situated a little further than the city center at Jalan Thamrin. This was the upscale plaza of Medan before the opening of Sun Plaza with the majority of the space has been taken up by Matahari Department Store, Food Court, Cinema, Kids Station, Next Clothing, BodyShop, Pizza Hut, Nelayan Restaurant and other smaller local shops.

Medan Plaza

Situated opposite of Medan Fair Plaza, Medan Plaza is located on Jalan Iskandar Muda Medan one of the earliest plaza built in Medan with many local shops selling mostly local fashion products

Plaza Millenium

Also a plaza built much earlier in Medan, Plaza Millennium is a little way out of city center at Jalan Kapten Muslim Medan. However, it is popular for its handphone center, which should be the largest in Medan for retail and wholesale since almost 85% of the retail space is filled with kiosks selling mobile phones.

Olympia Plaza

One of the earliest plaza built in 1985, Olympia Plaza located right next to Medan Mall at Jalan MT Haryono Medan now consists of mainly wholesale kiosks in the plaza. Mostly visited by businesses from out of town. Closes early, before 9 pm.

One of the first plaza built in Medan was City Plaza at Jalan Surabaya - Medan, which is now closed.

Deli Plaza Sinar Plaza Menara Plaza

Also known as The Sinar Menara Deli Plaza of Medan, this is a complex of three popular plaza in Medan. However, Sinar Plaza and Menara Plaza are now closed for re-development into the Deli Grand City.

Deli Plaza has been refurbished and is currently open for business for phase one where it will then be pulled down to make way for the Super Mega Block of The Deli Grand City of Medan Indonesia

Deli Grand City

This will be the latest plaza to be build in Medan. The Grand Deli City Project is taking up the space of the previous three-plaza-in-one shopping complex known as the Deli Plaza, Sinar Plaza and Menara Plaza. These plazas were the most popular shopping destination in Medan before the new Sun Plaza was built.

The Deli Grand City will house condominiums, hotels, convention and a mega mall which is currently under construction. It is still currently open with phase one under renovation.

Opposite The Grand Deli City is the JW Marriott Hotel Medan.

Cambridge Mall

Soon to be opened, Cambridge Mall is close to Sun Plaza and Medan Fair at the junction of Jalan Zainul Arifin and Jalan S.Parman Medan with 3 towers of luxury condominiums and the Grand Swiss BelHotel above the mall.

Perisai Plaza

Perisai Plaza was built in 1988 at Jalan Pemuda Medan along the street where most banks are located apart from Jalan Diponegoro, a very popular plaza in Medan famous for its cinema before all the new plazas are open and Macan Yaohan Supermarket on the 4th floor. As the plaza size is limited, there are not many new developments on the plaza.

It was supposed to be refurbished into a mobile phone center in 2006 where all the shops were requested to close down for renovations but the project did not continue without any formal explanations.

Bowling in Medan

Currently, the opening area is only on the top stories for bowling and karaoke KTV. Yes, one of the only Bowling arena in Medan.

Yuki Simpang Raya

This is more of a department store than a mall as it is owned and built by the Yuki Department Store Group in Medan. The plaza is located at the junction of Jalan Sisingamaraja, right opposite the iconic Grand Mosque of Medan and Madani Hotel.

It had one of the first Mc Donalds in Medan! The majority of the shopping space is the department store itself, otherwise the main attraction is on the top floor which has a family entertainment center with many rides and kids play area. This was a popular spot for family before the newer family entertainment centers such as Timezone, Amazon and Stingers arrive Medan filling up newer malls and plaza.

If we are not wrong, there is also a bowling arena in the basement area of this mall apart from the one in Perisai Plaza.

Medan Baru Plaza

This plaza was known as Medan Baru Plaza before the Ramayana Department Store group takes over and turn it into a Department Store. Located at the Medan Baru area of Medan.

Yang Lim Plaza

Located near Thamrin Plaza in the “Asia Area” of Medan. Yang Lim Plaza was just recently built in 2007 in a modern Chinese Design Architecture. This is not a big plaza hence not a wide mixture of tenants in the plaza, mostly consists of small shops and IT stores.

Since it is not on the main road, you may easily missed this plaza. Yang Lim Plaza can be accessed from Jalan Asia and Jalan Wahidin.
