Dim Sum is avaiable in Medan. I recommendated you which located at babura lama street. I have forgot the name of the restaurant. It’s quite famous in Medan.

Ermmm…heh heh .I love food sold at road side stall or shophouses. They are also as good as those sold at restaurants .No wonder I always heard the word “Hor Cheah” or “Medan Cheah Hor Leow” there.

But only one thing that puzzle me during my last trip was that I had tried a bowl of Mee sold at a simple shophouse that cost 4 times than I have to pay in my country.I am not overcharge because my local Medan relative brought me there and pay for it.When I try to figure out why ,my relative says that because that is a popular Mee stall .That was the only meal that I felt was too expensive .

I believe you may be referring to the noodle known as “Hock Seng”
It is one of the most expensive noodle / kopi thiam in Medan, the noodle cost over Rp35.000 per bowl, the standard noodles in Medan is around Rp11.000-Rp15.000

In the 70’s and 80’s, the stall used to be on Jl. Pandan (if not mistaken).
At that time, it seemed to be treated as a notch “better” along with those Chinese foods sold along the then quite “popular” Jl. Selat Panjang.

Back in those days, portions were normally big and with decent amount of “toppings” that made it worth the money. These days, not sure if it’s due to people’s eating habit or the vendors trying to get rich quickly, portions tend to be smaller.
Often time, the “toppings/meat” are ridiculously little, one has to search for it sprinkled on top of the noodle – almost as much as one would sprinkle chopped spring onion. Come on, is chicken or pork so expensive in Medan?

As for the “Hoc Seng” noodle, the taste somehow remains as tasteful as it was years ago. However, the price seems to rise much faster than the national inflation rate.
Talk about the “Ke Liao”, goodness – 2 shrimp-balls + the pork fat that health-conscious, First Fitness goers wouldn’t touch may cost and extra equivalent to a quater to half the price of a bowl of noodle.
But hey, Medan is full of deep-pocket, prideful business people; who would want to risk losing face for questioning/arguing the price of an overcharged bowl of noodle?

It’s definitely not the cost of the ingredients, or the setup of the restaurant which justifies the costs. Is it the brand, is it the taste or is it the fact that patrons are willing to pay which makes the price it is?

    Constant supply, stable/rising demands = high/er price.
