Rainbow Around the Sun in Medan!
This is an amazing phenomenon that happened in Medan today right about 12 noon to about 1 pm. Everyone called or sms their friends and family members to look up into the bright blue sky of Medan to see this “Rainbow Halo around the Sun” also known as a “Sun Dog” by meteorologist.
And you can see everyone reaching out for the camera phone and point it to the sky to take this amazing sight of a perfect circle of rainbow around the sun. So we took out ours too just to show you here.

Rainbows after rain are very common but seeing this ranbow-like halo around the sun is very rare. It is actually the same physics in play here. The halos usually appeared when there are high clouds overhead. These Clouds are made of tiny ice crystals which refract the sunlight.
There was no rain today although it did rained heavily last night causing storms and several districts out of electricity when several “trafo” from the PLN exploded.
This photo is taken from our car to show you a better picture. It was difficult to take a full circle of the halo effect as it is really HUGE and prominent above the sky. As it is noon time, the Sun Dog is right above with a bright sun shining down.
Halos are also optical phenomena that appear near or around the Sun or Moon, and sometimes near other strong light sources such as street lights. There are many types of optical halos, but they are mostly caused by ice crystals in cold cirrus clouds located high (5-10 km, or 3-6 miles) in the upper troposphere. The particular shape and orientation of the crystals is responsible for the type of halo observed. Light is reflected and refracted by the ice crystals and may split up into colours because of dispersion, similarly to the rainbow.
We did wonder if this phenomenon was only viewable around Medan? or further… ? If anyone has any information please feel free to share them in the comments below.

Another good picture taken at noon ( sun is larger and brighter ) But dont be mistaken, the black lines blocking the view are electrical lines commonly seen in hanging from house to house in Medan

Good photos, those are indeed ones of a sun dog. I have several sundog photos over the years, mostly due to ice in the Winter, but also a few in the Summer in Canada.
So sad, I missed it! But it really a wonderful phenomenon. God is great!
Sun Dog, one of God’s Creativity that shown to us. We have to say “Allohu Akbar……!” That’s so wonderful.

I saw this rainbow around the moon tonite at about midnite to 1:30 am. we went to a spot where i may get married in a year and I am sorry I missed the sun in such wonder. I feel it was a sign. walking distance from our home and a phone call from my place I got to share this view iwth only a friend or too. Chattanooga Tennessee!
I saw this today 4/10/2009 at mytrle beach south carolina between 12 and 2. It is a pretty amazing sight.
It is pretty amazing, you would notice everyone pointing their camera & mobile phone at the sky for an amazing picture.
i saw this too. i live out in the usa down in florida and isaw this too. my grandmother called me and told me about it. u can see them better when you are wearing sunglasses.

This morning one appeared around the sun in (Jamaica) the caribbean, it lasted for approximately three hours everyone was taking pictures.
I live in Gahanna, Ohio, USA. My birthday was May 17th (yesterday) and while playing soccer noticed a Halo Rainbow around the sun and mentioned it to one of the officials and we both thought it was AWESOME! At the same time there was a 2nd rainbow below it that was more flattened than normal. But seeing 2 rainbows was quite a sight. Too bad I did not have my brand new camera w/ me.
It is truly an amazing site and the most amazing is that everyone around the world are able to experience it one time or another.

My wife and I saw a rainbow around the sun in Marietta, Georgia on July 13, 2009 around 1:00 pm. We had never seen one before. Very cool.

My sisters funeral was today and right after the released the dove we all noticed the halo rainbow around the sun. I believe that was my sister telling me she loved her funeral and everything is going to be okay!

We had a halo on the 9th of August in upstate New York, when our head Lama at a Buddhist Retreat, and many other high Lamas, gathered together with us. It was a phenomenal sight!!!

I too caught the Sun Dogs here in San Antonio Texas. I was so in awe that I took had to take out my camera phone and snap some pictures and have posted them on my Facebook page. Was such a beautiful sight!!
We just witnessed ANOTHER Rainbow Halo around the sun in Medan (North Sumatra Indonesia) today at around 11.15am!

My boyfriends funeral was yesterday & leaving the Cemetary we witnessed this beautiful rainbow around the sun. It gave me chills thinking “Lundy” was now looking down upon us telling us that it’s all o.k. now. Wow , Ive never seen anything like it. This was in Gays Mills Wisconsin U.S.A.

Hey there, the pictures you post are indeed of a sun halo.
today i photographed a sun halo on a cloudy but sunny day, we had had a week of glorious weather and then a few days of dismal rain, today was the first dry day after the rain.
the halo is made up of water crystals and droplets in the air.
i have also photgraphed arcs in the past too – these are upside down rainbows, very funky looking.
i am in the UK.

I saw the round rainbow on saturday july 24th about noon. I am from Franklin, wisconsin a suburb of Milwaukee. I am 76 years old and I never seen or heard about this before.
Me and my friend saw this for the very first time this past week August 16, 2010 around 3pm in Indiana it was so awesome! Never even knew this happened anywhere. I came on this site just to find out what it was. She took a pic with her phone. Im glad we were able ot see that!
I just took a photo of one this morning! AWESOME! I was on my way to work and called my 13 year old daughter to see it; she did and also took photos. I called my in-laws because of where they live (higher up) they had a better shot at seeing the complete circle. It was at 8:17 a.m. Truly amazing sight to behold, and on 9/11…truly a gift! Thank you for your beautiful pictures and stories! I had NEVER seen anything like this before.
this halo just seen in south africa ,johannesburg at 10:05 am its amazing could this b the beginning of the end of the world .this has not been seen ever in the world so how do peps know that it is the ice particles or clouds above ,so why does it not happen everyday
Today 01st November 2010, arround 09h30, there appearred a full rainbow like circle, dark inner fading into a rain bow, around the sun. It was awsome, the cellphones and cameras flashed to capture this spectaculer.
Just wanderring if this is a common sign or do it have a specific meaning to it.

Wow!, it wasn’t my imagination. Here in London, UK, 23rd December 2010, about 13h30. I saw this with my 7yr old daughter. The description I gave was a rainbow halo around the sun. It was truly an awesome sight. As usual, nobody else was looking up. I tried to show a lady but she just ignored me. Too bad people are too self focussed to notice the beauty that God has surrounded us with.

I live on Cape Cod MA in the US. I saw a rainbow halo around the sun a few months ago. I took some photos, they’re on my website. It was amazing!!!
We live in Hamilton, Ontario Canada and we were on a family day to a waterpark when I saw this rainbow around the sun. I had never seen anything like this, nor heard anything about it before… ever! It kinda freaked me out lol
I could only see it with my sun glasses on.. and from what I have read, it says rain is near.. but that is not the case here! No rain in the forcast for at least another week and we havent had rain for almost a week! Interesting!
I was wondering how common is this ? I firs t started to notice the halo three years ago. I would see it maybe 3 times a month but now its almost everyday. i even seen over 3 times this month the rainbow around the moon . colors bursting out of the clouds and other things . The rainbows around the sun are almost with me everyday now. I think GOD telling us something.
I saw two of these. totallly different though. it was much darker in the ring than any other place in the sky. i looked up, nut it hurt to look up. so i got sun glasses, but my eyes kept hurting. it was much bigger than whats up there^ it was here in Grafton, North Dakota. around noon in the summer. i moved saw it again but much different. it didnt hurt my eyes and it was side ways instead of straight up. i was watching something last night, i dont know what about, but one of the girls said that it could have been a portal for aliens. i cant really belive that though. i mean who knows… do aliens really exists?
Today was my dear friend’s funeral. At the end of the graveside service people began to notice a brilliant rainbow-colored halo around the sun. It was as if God allowed us to see just a glimpse of my friend’s new eternal glory. Absolutely gorgeous.
Today is the 2nd of October 2012. I did see the sun with a rainbow halo in Kuala Lumpur at the time reported from Medan, Indonesia. It is wonderful to see such a beautiful work of Mother Nature.
