Police on High Alert in case of Military Revenge in Medan
Police in North Sumatra beefed up security at their offices across Medan on Wednesday, as tension between them and the local military rose after an army soldier was shot dead by a policeman during a robbery chase.
First Sgt. Yuda Nugraha, the army victim, died Tuesday evening at a hospital after being shot in the head, while the police suspect, First Brig. Hendro Siswoyo, is still being questioned about the incident.
North Sumatra Police chief Insp. Gen. Badrodin Haiti acknowledged Wednesday that he issued instructions asking all subprecinct police stations in his jurisdiction to increase security to prevent possible soldiers from creating havoc to avenge the victim of the shooting incident.
The police, he added, had also made a special request for help from the Military Police to guard the Helvetia subprecinct police station in Medan, where Hendro is normally on duty.
“We need to stay alert to prevent unexpected events from occurring following the accidental shooting,” Badrodin told reporters after a joint parade comprising members of the National Police and the National Army (TNI), as well as regional leaders, at the North Sumatra Police headquarters.
Badrodin said he apologized to the Bukit Barisan Military Command I, where Yuda served, for the incident.
“I’m very sorry about the shooting incident.
“I have publicly delivered my regrets to the Bukit Barisan military command I and First Sgt. Yuda Nugraha’s family,” he said.
“Hopefully, this incident will not disturb the harmonious relationship between the police and military that was established over the years,” Badrodin said.
He said the police were questioning the man who shot the victim, and promised there would be “no intervention” in the probe.
The provincial police chief also assured Hendro would be punished for both criminal and disciplinary offenses if found guilty.
“All legal proceedings will be conducted in a transparent manner,” he said.
Hendro shot Yuda in the head at close range when the two were chasing robbers who had stolen a necklace from a lady on Jl. Cemara in Medan, on Monday night.
The two thieves, who escaped on a motorcycle after snatching the lady’s necklace, were also chased by surrounding people and fell down exactly when Yuda was passing by in the street.
Yuda immediately arrested the two robbers, but one later managed to run away. He then ran after the thief that was escaping, but was shot by Hendro in the head.
Yuda was then rushed to Gleni Hospital in Medan, where he died at 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday from the serious shot wounds.
He was buried Wednesday afternoon at the Medan Hero Cemetery Park and given a military ceremony.
In response to Yuda’s death, Bukit Barisan Military Command spokesman Lt. Col. Asren Nasution said his office had asked all soldiers “not to provoke and retaliate against” the police over the shooting incident.
Asren added the incident was not a fight between the Army and police, and the North Sumatra police chief “had apologized to him for the case”.
