North Sumatra EarthQuake this morning cuts 11 power generators in North Sumatra
At least 11 power generators belonging to state electricity company PLN in North Sumatra have halted operations following the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that shook the neighboring province of Aceh on Wednesday, Antara has reported.
PLN general manager for the North Sumatra area Dedy Pranoto said the disruption had caused blackouts in many parts of the province as the company had lost more than 60 percent of its total capacity of 1,300 megawatts.
“The company is repairing the power generation system to avoid more outages. We hope to cope with the problem step by step,” he said.
Company spokesman Marodjohan Batubara said the generators’ protection systems had caused them to stop automatically following the tremor. Due to the generator failure, the company had suspended power supplies to Aceh.
The Jakarta Post reported as of 11 a.m. PLN had regained 350 megawatts of power supply, Dedy said.
For those visiting Medan, there should not be any disruptions if you are in the city as most retailers and hotels are self powered with power generators since they have
anticipated regular power failures in the city.
