New Medan Motorway for 2019

North Sumatra will have a new motorway / highway connecting Medan-Tebing Tinggi-Siantar-Prapat which is targeted to complete by 2019. The motorway project is meant to improve tourism and for Medan and the tourist destination of Danau Toba / Lake Toba. When completed, the journey from Medan to Prapat, the town of Lake Toba will take only 2.5 hours, much shorter than the current 4 hours drive.

However, this can be a challenging task ahead for the government remembering that the motorway project for Tanjung Morawan to Kuala Namu where the new Kuala Namu International Airport of Medan will be located is still not completed.

There are many other motorway projects for North Sumatra which are all targeted to be completed by 2019 and mostly delays are due to clearing of land areas for the motorway as land owners demand market value for their land which is higher than stated value in property tax. The whole project needs a total budget of Rp 9,513 triliun.

These issues caused delays as it turns out to be an expensive venture for investors to invest in the development of the motorway such as the motorway connecting Medan and Binjai.

The Tanjung Morawa-Lubuk Pakam-Kuala Namu motorway project will be handled by the central government while the motorway project connecting  Lubuk Pakam-Tebing Tinggi will be open for investors to tender the project. Both of which are targeted to operate by the year 2014. Winner of tender project for motorway Lubuk Pakam-Tebing Tinggi will receive rights to manage the motorway.

Wow, Medan – Prapat in only 2,5 hours. Fantastic! February this year, it took me almost 6 hours from Hotel Polonia Medan to Hotel Niagara Prapat using a Kijang cab from a transportation agency called Raja Taxi as I had to wait about 30 minutes at the agency office and the cab stopped over many places to drop passengers and load new passengers along Medan – Prapat beside changing cabby in Pematang Siantar.

A tiring trip but didn’t feel regrettably because Toba lake was really beautiful viewed from the balcony of the hotel room. I got a newly refurbished Junior Deluxe room at Rp. 460.000,-. It was a good deal.

Good to have a highway for the convenience .But I am sad that trees will be cut down and the natural environment will somehow be affected.I went Danau Toba only once many years back.I enjoy more on travelling on the road and looking at the trees on the way than the lake.I remember the tree more than the lake.
Hope that trees will not be cut down unnecessary for the project.,especially the durian trees………hehehe…

Approximately how many pieces of durians do you eat in one year?

In 2006 my wife and I trecked from her parents home in Western Medan to Lake Toba,Prapat for our honeymoon. It took about 4 hours in her brothers private coach. We will be traveling back to Medan Indo. from Redding Cali(US) around 2010,so will not be able to experience the new finished highway. It’ll be ok though,as I will have my International Drivers Permit and driving on the left will be an all out experience all by itself !

I went to lake toba round about mei 2008, it took us about 5 hours to get to prapat stopping at siantar.
Lake toba beautiful naturally, I may consider to return when the highway is completed, thank you for the information. You are doing a good job promoting Medan

It’s about time for North Sumatra and other province in Indonesia to improve the infrastructure. We have so much good places to expose to other country but due to the lack of information and promotion and also the access to the wonderful places sometimes isn’t representable makes tourist dissapointed. Regarding Kuala Namu airport also until now….????? I hope every promises that has ever been made could be realised asap…

    Mike,

Changing from driving on the right to driving on the left or vice versa is not a big problem. At the beginning, you will only feel a bit confused when you make a turn but you will soon get accustomed to it. The more difficult is how to get used to Indonesian disordered traffic – with cars, buses, motor-bikes and pedestrians mixed up in one road. In the States, I have drived in LA City, LA – Las Vegas – Grand Canyon – Phoenix – Sedona – LA and Florida – Key West. I found that it is much easier to drive in US than in Indonesia.

  10. Kenji on November 17th, 2009 12:57 am

But that is self promotion by each of the facebooker. And I have never seen you writing on Medanese girls! :o

    Kenji.
Medan GIRLS are special and need no promotion.Medan Ku had indeed done a great job .They are gracious not to moderate my playful comments so I think its not fair to ask them to promote Medan Girls here.
If it is fair,I would have ask them to do so years back when I read about Medan Ku.
Remember:Medan Girls are special and needs no promotion. My dream is to marry one but after so many years , still hunting.hehehe.Instead of asking Medan ku to promote Medan Girls, maybe you should ask them How to win the heart of Medan Girls(provided you are still bachelor)

  12. Kenji on November 19th, 2009 11:38 am

In accordance with agongkia’s advice, now I ask the moderator how to win the hearts of Medanese girls? :)

I’ve been travel to Medan frequently, by saying that I visits tourist attraction places such as Lake Toba, Tongging and Brastagi. I observed the roads leading to the destinations still remain the same from year to year. Appreciate if the government improve the transportation and also the roads. The road condition was not permit us to arrive smoothly this was due to uneven surface. I hope in future year the roads, transportation and tourist attraction places has been improved.
