The airport tax for international flights is Rp75.000 per person. When you are queueing to check in your luggage, you may find many agents around the terminal helping people checking in their baggage. This is very common in Medan as most of the travel companies in Medan has an agent / representative at the airport terminal to help their customers check in their luggage, fill in all the custom forms, help them queue up to pay for the airport tax, payment of Fiskal (for Indonesians and permit holders) etc. This service is not only for tour packages but is also included when you purchase air tickets from the travel operators.

You will also find luggage wrapping service at the airport. There are two types of baggage/luggage wrapping service.
- The normal string that wraps tightly over which you may have seen offered FREE at other airports, it is however not FREE at Medan airport.
- The plastic wrapper that wraps all over the bag which helps protect your bag from moisture, rain or scratch. Recommended if you have valuable items in the bag or your bag is precious (expensive).

just came back from Medan on 18 Dec(arrived fr Singapore on 15 Dec).I would like to share my bad experience in Medan.The tour agent Anthony from 4 seasons holiday was very vicious-he demand a tip from us.But we refused to give him on the departure date.He did not do a good job,and my husband was very upset on most of the itinery programmes that was schedule for us as we were on 4D/3N.He treatened that if we did not give him tips,he said he will make us trouble and we will not get through the immigration.When we wanted to take our boarding pass,the counter staff said that they were unable to make our clearance,and we ask why?She even ask us what happened!My husband was very angry and told her the tour agent demand for $$$.She said we must be vigilant on this as they are capable of doing all sort of things.I prayed that God will helps us.With God grace,we managed to go through all the hassle and was lucky not to paid any single cent to the tour agents(but we give the driver IDR$50,000).Not say we do not have money we still have IDR$1,000,000 with us.It is upsetting. if you do a good service we always gives tips to THOSE WHO WE DEEMED FIT!
If we do want to experience to do it our own may I know where I can I find any guide or instruction? Like where to find the “forms”, where to pay the “tax”, where to get the funny “passport photograph”? and how the routine should be? and if we do like to use the agent, how much would be nice to give? 20k? 50k? 10k? or 5k?
As mentioned, the service is offered by local travel agents where you purchase your air tickets from.
It is a Free service from your local Medan travel agents, you are not obliged to give any tips. It is totally up to you. Rp10.000 to Rp20.000 should be enough unless you are traveling in a large group.
If you are a tourist, you can do these by yourself easily. The signs are written in English too so you dont need an agent.
You can find all the immigration forms at the check in counters. Fiskal forms at Fiskal counter on the left of the entrance. Airport tax can be paid on the left of entrance too.

Last time I travel to Medan with my Ducth friends and we had use one of the agent to give the “service” and he manage to to everything for us until check in~
We had reaching a counter where our passport is capture using a digital camera in a small counter. That was on the left handed counter as we paying the 75k Rp.
Caused last time they do it all for my Dutch friend including me, so I didn’t see how shall I proceed the flow, please correct me if I’m wrong as I want o try it once myself on 1st of Jan 2009 (my departure date. ^^
1. Collect immigration forms from immigration dept, filled in ofcause.
2. Collect Fiskal form from fiscal dept, filled in ofcause.
3. Fill in that 2 forms and with my passport, handed to left counter to pay 75k rp and make your passport capture by the digital camera.
4. Finally proceed to my airline counter check in.
I didnt know Dutch has to pay Fiskal?
Are you sure?
If you had traveled INTO Medan from other country, then you should already have your departure card in your passport, so you dont need to use any new immigration card. The only immigration card you will need is for the destination country which you can either get from the check in counter or on the plane.
If you are Medanese traveling OUT from Medan, then you will need your immigration/departure card which you can request from the check in counter.
You dont have to do all these before airline counter check in, you can do it before or after, it does not matter.
But you will need to do these before immigration of course.
As for the passport being captured by digital camera, I dont think they do this anymore.
Di ruang tunggu keberangkatan international lantai atas. Terdapat 3 lampu penerangan wattage tinggi atau lazim dikenal lampu sorot. Lampu tersebut tepat menyinari muka dan mata para penumpang yang dudum diruang tunggu. Hal ini sangat tidak nyaman bahkan menyiksa. Mohon perhatian mangement angkasa pura terima kasih
Rotten Service from the Local Tour Representative-
With reference to the above-mentioned, I am writing to lodge a complaint against the Mr. Anthony Tan, the tour guard from Four Seas Holiday Medan, Indonesia. As a frequent traveler, I have been on many different package tours. I must say I have never been more disgusted and upset with any tour representative then I have with Four Seas’ representative on my recent 4D3N trip to Medan/ Parapat/ Brastagi (30th Apr’09-3rd May’09). I was very dissatisfied with the quality of his service.
1)Lie to customer. As we have no chance to tour around Medan upon arrival in Day 1 and we are not putting a night at Medan, we have requested Mr. Anthony to depart earlier from Brastagi to Medan on Day 4. Reason being, we wish to spend some time at the Sun Plaza after our Medan city tour, as we need to catch our flight at 4:35pm. Mr. Anthony planned to depart at 8:30am from Brastagi while we suggested 8am, which is only half an hour earlier. Can you imagine what’s his reply? Mr. Anthony commented that there is nothing much in Medan and Istana Maimoon (the only place of interest) is not as big as Forbidden City in Beijing. Don’t you think such a comparison is ridiculous? Is he trying to tell tourists that they should not visit the “nothing much” Medan city? This led me to ponder whether Four Seas Holiday is going out of business soon since Medan has “nothing much” to visit? The worst part is he even told us that Sun Plaza open at 11am (note that our last day- Day 4 is a Saturday). Mr. Anthony even reiterated in front of the whole group that the batik and bird nest shops also open only at 11am! WHICH IS TOTALLY A LIE!!! We reached the bird nest shop at 10.25am and the batik shop at 10.40am and they have started business!! Also, I have asked a few of the promoters at Sun Plaza and all of them said the mall was opened at 10am the day we were there (remember! our last day in Medan was a Saturday). Sun Plaza only open at 11am during weekdays. How on earth Four Seas employed a liar tour representative! This is completely unacceptable!! Maybe you could justify by telling me “opps! Mr. Anthony has no idea that Sun Plaza opens an hour earlier during the weekends though he grew and lives in Medan”.
2)Basic but essential information left unrevealed. Upon arrival at the Polonia Airport, Medan, we were transferred straight to Lake Toba. We were not informed as to the time required for the drive to Lake Toba. Without having been to Lake Toba, we would have no knowledge at all. Mr. Anthony, being the representative, should advise us as to the traveling time once he met us at the airport so we could at least grab some food and drinks from the kiosk and even go to washroom before hopping on the bus but he didn’t. We have suffered from thirst and hunger for 3-hours drive before the 1st stop at the “Kacang Tumbuk” shop. It’s understood that none of us have any drinking water with us right after arrival due to the implementation of the 100ml liquids, aerosols and gel containers restriction or maybe he has never flown before.
3)Unfriendly. No salutation. Throughout the four days trip, Mr. Anthony has never greeted us. We are not expecting a warm greeting from him, but neither a good morning nor thank you from him (when we left). Also, not even a “smile” from him! Being a tour representative, he was rude. He needs to be taught to smile, say hello and be more courteous.
4)Never bother to check the food during mealtime. We were provided with 9 meals (3 Breakfast 3 Lunch and 3 Dinner) and Mr. Anthony had never ever approached any of our table (though only 2 in total) throughout the trip. He has never once asked how’s the food or even walked by to look at the food. ZERO attention! Considering it is just a simple basic manner, a plain waiter could play a better role and behave better than him.
5)Never disclose his phone number or hotel room number to us. We were not given his local number once he picked us up. Also, he has never given us his hotel room number. Should there be any emergency, whom should we contact then? Though it is not the local practice where local representative would be given a hotel room, I was sure that he got a room at Niagara Hotel. I have even taken the initiative to ask him for his hotel room number at Niagara and guess what’s his replied? Mr. Anthony lied to me that he was not offered a room, and mentioned I could get assistance from the reception desk, of which in reality he had a room. HE LIES TO CUSTOMER AGAIN! You could just call up the hotel to verify that. It was 30th Apr’09 night and I was sure he indeed had a room.
6)No effort to make sure that everything in our hotel room works. Based on my past travel experiences, tour guide will stop by at our room after we checked in to ensure all the room’s facilities are in proper working order and we are fine. Mr. Anthony had never even called us up to ask the condition of our room or find out if we need any help.
7)Nothing other than smsing! Texting, reading and smiling at his cellular phone sms messages was Mr. Anthony’s most favorite doings. He occupied himself in doing so at mealtime, in bus/ boat, even standing when we were doing our shopping. Dear General Manager, can you please enlighten me as to what’s the role of a tour representative? He is employed to service customers or to have fun with sms?
It’s a total disastrous trip!! There is a total absence of customer service skills in Mr. Anthony! And surely, we would not recommend friends to engage Four Seas Holiday Medan, Indonesia as their local representative should they plan to visit Medan. Needless to say we will never come back here again!
Saya baru saja balik dari berehat bersama isteri salama 4 hari di Medan . Cuma dikota Medan -tidak keluar dari kota . Satu pengalaman hidup yang menarik . Rata rata rakyat Medan berbudi tinggi ,biar pun didalam kehidupan harian yang menghimpit .Saya benar benar gembira . Tambahan pula penginapan dan service di Hotel Madani -tempat tinggal salama 4 hari ,sangat sangat membahagiakan kami berdua . Shukran .
Cuma dipenutupnya agak mendukacitakan !! Mendengar rungutan rungutan ketika menunggu pesawat ,saya rasa ianya telah menjadi rahsia umum . Keadaan di BENDARA / AIRPORT amat tidak menyenangkan. Orang orang yang tidak berkenaan dibiarkan bebas keluar masuk hingga ka boarding room. Kerja meraka ini adalah menipu dan cuba menipu dimana saja yang bolih . Contohnya trolley yang dimana saja airport diseluroh dunia yang telah saya kunjungi , disediakan untuk kegunaan penumpang , berada ditangan kutu kutu /maling ini – jika mahu mesti gunakan service mereka !! .Bagitu juga untuk check -in .Mereka bertindak saperti consultant . Dan tentu nya dengan bayaran agak besar . Apakah bendara Polinia ini bagitu hebat kapada orang orang saperti saya yang telah menjelajah merata pelusuk dunia ini ? . Saya dan isteri terlalu sedih bilamana saorang ,yang saya pasti ,saorang pegawai juga disitu kerana mulanya berdiri dibelakang counter check-in ,datang kapada saya yang baru hendak mengisi borang fiskal , menghulurkan ballpennya untuk saya gunakan ,kemudian datang mengikut saya yang dipintu boarding menagih upahnya !! Pegawai pegawai lain melihat tapi tidak ada apa apa reaksi pun !! . MashaAllah !!
Ketika duduk menunggu di boarding room saorang gadis Tionhua memegang passport indonesia ,kedengaran bercerita dengan temannya ,”hampir 100 ribu saya kena bayar tambahan .Ini tidak heran -kerana walikota dan assistant nya juga dikenakan tuduhan korapsi .Apa kah benar ,saya tidak tahu .Cuma saya katakan kapada isteri saya ,salagi bagini ,saya tidak akan ke Medan lagi !!
apakah ini yg kita mahu pekerja2 di airport melakukan kepada tourist dari negara sendiri dan luar negara? saya pernah ke Penang, dan melihat ada
passenger tinggalkan beberapa beg di ruang duduk dan sekitarnya, mereka pergi entah kemana dan hampir 45 minit mereka meninggalkan bagasi mereka. tapi mereka tidak kelihatan risau dan bimbang dgn keadaan itu, saya memerhatikannya dan memikirkan bahawa di Penang selamat berbuat demikian.
Kegunaan troley airport tidak dikenakan sewa dan bebas.
Dengan itu saya harap kita orang Indonesia perlu meniru service yg baik dari negara mana sekalipun. Experience di Penang tu adalah contoh yg terdekat.
errr..agak menggerunkan pulak mendengar komen2 di sini..saya bakal ke sana tidak lama lagi bersama suami..all by ourselves..my friend yang tinggal di Medan ada urusan di Malaysia pada tika saya ke sana membuatkan saya rasa terlalu risau..hope everythings going well..
