NEW Domestic Terminal – Medan Polonia Airport
This is the first time we have experienced Medan Polonia Airport NEW Domestic Terminal since it was burnt down. The terminal is now brighter and more spacious. However, it lacks many facilities of a new modern airport.
You can see a short video clip here of the boarding gate below. The obvious thing you noticed are the many flat panel (advertising) TV which even the International Terminal do not have with short clips and many adverts
. There is also a “smoking room” on the far right at the rear.
Credit Card Holders will miss the airport lounge most as the new domestic terminal has NO exclusive airport lounges.
In Indonesia, most credit card issuers provide their card holders the facility of exclusive use of airport lounges where they are provided with light snacks and drinks for Free, plus Internet Connection, reading materials and cleaner toilets. The previous domestic terminal had 2 of such lounges where credit card holders can enjoy while waiting for their flights. But the newly repaired terminal have none of these lounges for use and the boarding gate looks somewhat like the budget terminal of the Airport in Kuala Lumpur.
It can really be seen that this is a temporarily measure the airport authorities have taken with the plan of the new airport at Kuala Namu. We have no official news of when the new aiport will be ready. Hopefully, it will stay on schedule for 2010?

you are right, it does look like the budget terminal LCT at Kuala Lumpur
My spouse and I used the old terminal when we flew in and out of Medan several times in 06′. The small area for international flights was very cramped and the even smaller areas for domestics we were unaware of. however, my spouse being quite physically dissabled was surprised by the kindness shown for his dissabilities by the air-port security.
Out only complaint was in the toilets, the areas smelled most horribly of urine and only cold water hand stations were available. The floors were very slippery and no efforts were available for wheel chairs whatsoever. we are hopeing that there has been an effort made by the new air-port building commission and management to see that there are now better toilet and wash-sinks for wheel chair / disabled fliers ?
The air-port tax did not seem very much to the American family side, US air-ports charge even greater taxes, though they are included as air-flight taxes on the trip ticket(s) charges. To the tipicle Indonesian traveler the air-port taxes seem a little steep, but so go they in every air-port as the air-port grows and/or is re-built – so the tax increases.
Indonesians be comforted ! In the US, alot of air-ports have had to budget down and cancle direct flights. Winter as well means snow and ice which means special foam for run-ways that still opperate in those conditions. All of which means excess flight taxes, long air-port flight waits and many cancelations.
If your Indonesian heading for America you should know that prices at air-ports are sometimes higher domestically than internationally ! Hope you have a great time and a fat wallet, as in comparison Indonesia is far more advanced in the education of being polite than most in America. Though this is not always true.
