BIKA AMBON
Famous and populer food from Medan si Bika Ambon (kind of cakes) with the combination
of pandan leaf fragrance and the sweettness, makes this cake tastes delicious . Very suitable as a souvenirs from Medan.
RENDANG
Other famous food from Medan, which tipically is a West Sumatra food. Rendang in Medan usually fried till crispy, so it’s very delicious in taste, and also very spicy cause Medan people love to eat spicy foods. So for those who can’t eat spicy, don’t forget to prepare a galon of water…
KARE AYAM
Other spicy food is Kare Ayam (Chicken Curry), usually served with rice and also can be mixed with riced noodles (Bihun), which called “Kare Bihun”. If you choosed the restaurant smartly, you can get a very delicious Chicken curry rice (Nasi Kari Ayam).
SIOMAY
Siomay in Medan, is different with Siomay Jakarta or Yogyakarta Siomay Medan is like Dimsum in Jakarta and Solo, the difference is, the sauce is specially made, not only using a ready made sauce. Very delicious when served and eat while still hot and with it’s sauce. You can taste it at one of Nelayan restaurant in Medan.
TAUCO UDANG
Chinese food style which you can meet in Medan, one of these is “Tauco Udang”, which very popular among Medan Chinese people. Seasoning with Tauco and sauce, mixed with shrimp and combined with all kind of vegetables, make this cuisine tastes sour+ sweet + salty which combined, especially if served while hot, such a ‘ Budha Delight’ food…
SENGSU
This is a traditional Batak’s food, from dog meat, which is a favorite food for Batak’s people in Medan.
DURIAN MEDAN
Durian (Smelly Fruit) is very famous from Medan, with their smell and their taste . Their prices also cheaper than Durian Jakarta. The price of super sized Durian in Medan is between Rp. 4.000,- till Rp. 10.000,- each, in their season. But if not in their season, the price can reachto Rp. 15.000,-. Mie Tiau Medan
Almost every corner in Medan, there is a restaurant, cafe and stall which served ‘Mie Tiau’ (Kuetiaw). The seasoned for Kuetiaw is only garlic, red onion, pepper, chilli and ginger. More deliciously, add leaf of onion, cabbage, and tomato. All inggridients is boiled, then add the eggs. After that, we put the Kuetiau, soy sauce and flavored spices. As complement, we can add crackers, cucumber, and chicken or shrimp sliced, and meat balls. Also can be eat using pickles
Marquisa Syrup
Just like Bika Ambon, marquisa syrup also a populer souvenirs from Medan. One of the famous trade mark for Marquisa Syrup is Pyramid Unta. The marquisa is gathered from Tanah Karo (Brastagi), Dairi, Samosir, Solok, and Ujung Pandang. Beside as souvenirs, Medan people like to serve this syrup when celebrate the Lebaran and New Year
Es Campur Medan
Es campur Medan, contain cendol (lumpy syrup), lengkong atau cincau, delima, jack fruit, corn, red bean, and tape. All of this is served with sugar palm and cocnut milk.
Mie Keling
Although the original recipe is from India, this food is already become a typical Medan food. The ingridients for this mie, is just like an ordinary boiled mie. But inside that, is added sprouts, lettuce, potato sliced, tofu, cucumber, boiled eggs, and sprayed with celery and crackers. Then all of these is sprayed with special sauce. This sauce that makes the specialty to ‘Mie Keling’. The inggridients is from dried shrimp adn other inggridients. Thickening with starch.Those ‘Mie Keling’ inggridients sauce is special indeed.
Putu Bambu & Putu Mayang
Putu Bambu is made from salted coconut-milk with a lump of palm sugar in the center of the dumpling and then steamed in a container made from a bamboo shoot. While Putu Mayang is made from steamed rice-cake pressed through a perforated mould and thus resembling vermicelli, which is sprinkled with shredded coconut and palm sugar.
