Medan Airport On Fire
Medan Airport is on Fire AGAIN!
One of Indonesia’s busiest airports was closed indefinitely on Saturday after a fire razed the domestic passenger terminal, a top airport administrator said. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
Last night at about 9pm WIB - Indonesia time, Medan Domestic Airport terminal caught fire. The fire was huge destroying the “whole” domestic terminal . The cause of the fire is still not known most probably an electronic circuit problem.
Medan airport is in urgent need to move to the planned new airport in Kuala Namu.
Medan Polonia Airport is located in Indonesia’s third-largest city, Medan, the regional capital of Sumatra island. It handles about 4.5 million passengers a year and has been criticized in the past for reportedly operating far beyond its capacity built for 900.000 passengers a year.
The cause of the fire was not immediately clear, North Sumatra police chief Maj. Gen. Nurudin Usman told reporters. Forensic teams had begun investigating the source even as the blaze continued, he said.
The facility had to be closed “because almost all of the infrastructure was razed,” said Yuli Sudoso, the top airport administrator. The international terminal was not damaged.
Several months ago, the international terminal caught fire due to electronic circuit problem causing a havoc and disruption in international arrivals in Medan.
Today, all travelers using the domestic terminal has to check in under tents outside of the destroyed terminal. It was even raining today.
It will not be a good experience at all, there are no more lounges to relax in as you have to wait under the uncontrollable weather conditions in Medan.
Flights are not disrupted but I would Re-schedule your domestic flights to Medan if I were you unless there are important business meetings to avoid the chaotic airport.
Air travel is a major form of domestic transportation in Indonesia, a sprawling nation of 235 million people spread over 17,500 tropical islands.
