Indonesia Presidential Election Results 2009
As Indonesians elects their President on 08 July 2009, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono commonly known as SBY enjoyed victory as initial quick count results shows as Telegraph.co.uk reports:
The official tally will not be available for days or even weeks, but the initial results echoed a raft of exit polls that gave the 59-year-old former general 60 percent of the vote.
That would put SBY – as Mr Yudhoyono is popularly known – well over the 50 per cent threshold needed to avoid a second-round runoff against his nearest rival in September.

Analysts believe such an emphatic win for the man who became the country’s first democratically elected president five years ago will cement his position and quicken the pace of reform.
The election commission’s preliminary result, based on 18.7 million votes counted, gave Mr Yudhoyono 62 per cent. Challenger Megawati Sukarnoputri, daughter of Indonesia’s first post-colonial leader Sukarno, got 28 per cent and outgoing vice president Jusuf Kalla, was a distant third with just 10 per cent.
Within hours of the polls closing yesterday Mr Yudhoyono’s challengers made accusations of electoral irregularities, questioned the exit polls and threatened a legal action once the final result is revealed.
Prabowo Subianto, an ex-special forces general accused of human rights abuses and former president Megawati’s running mate, said the campaign team was preparing a legal action over “fraud” in the poll.
Mr Yudhoyono displayed the characteristic caution that caused many to label him “indecisive” during his first term in office by failing to make outright claims of victory.
“The ‘official’ vote count is clearly not finished, although quick counts show the success of our struggle,” said Mr Yudhoyono in the face of mounting exit poll evidence of his emphatic victory.
Mr Yudhoyono – who rose under the dictator Suharto who was forced out eleven years ago after more than three decades in power – is seen as a liberal who has provided much-needed stability.
Despite the challenges of dismal infrastructure and 30 million Indonesians living below the poverty line, Mr Yudhoyono is credited with bringing economic prosperity with the economy set to grow four percent even in the face of the global downturn.
