I love the Grand Swiss Bel Hotel. It is near everywhere and easy to reach. The food is so so delicious and the staff is very friendly and easy to talk to. I hope a lot of people will come and visit this hotel. What I like also it has a mall and supermarket connected that I could often come and shop.

  3. David Chua on March 6th, 2009 1:03 pm

Is the Spa opened? It was not open on my last trip. The swimming pool was not ready yet too. Rooms a little small for a 5 star hotel

  4. Paul Ambrose on March 6th, 2009 2:08 pm

The location of the hotel is very convenient because of the mall next to it. I am pleased with the hotel standards

  5. Marcia Ravens on March 6th, 2009 9:29 pm

Thank you for this. I have been trying to see whats inside Grand Swissbel to compare with Aryaduta. What’s the price like?

  6. Richard Beckwith on March 6th, 2009 10:01 pm

wow, medan has changed and developed
anybody knows the rate of the hotel rooms?

  7. Michico Velazquez on March 6th, 2009 10:18 pm

    To Marcia Ravens :
Our hotel hv few types of room :
Deluxe Room is IDR 678.000 ( single bF) , IDR 728.000
    Superior Deluxe IDR 828.000 & 878.000
    Grand Deluxe IDR 1.238.000 & 1.288.000

    To David Chua :
    I think i know u.. U were staying at R#1612 before, right?
Don’t know whether u still remember, I was the staff in charge that handle ur internet problem.. The pool is ready to use! Our room sizes are various, it is small because the one u were staying at is the smallest size we had. ;) Overall, it is according Swiss-Bel standard.

Thank u for all. Looking forward seeing u all soon.

    Thanks Michico,

    How about the Spa?

  9. matthew on March 7th, 2009 12:49 am

are those rack rates? Or discounted? They seem a little expensive.

  10. Kenji on March 9th, 2009 1:43 am

Matthew, those are the best discounted rates the hotel can offer directly to customers. Their published rates are: Deluxe IDR 1,130,000.- Superior Deluxe IDR 1,280,000.- Grand Deluxe IDR 1,780,000.- Suite IDR 2,480,000.- and President Suite IDR 3,980,000.- (Prices are net for single occupancy with breakfast and welcome drink. For double occupancy add IDR 50,000.-)

And their promotional rates listed at their site are: Deluxe USD 68 Superior Deluxe USD 83 Grand Deluxe USD 133 all net for single supplement with breakfast and welcome drink. If you use current hotel rate which is approximately USD 1 = IDR 12,500.- to convert, they become IDR 850,000.-, IDR 1,037,500.- and IDR 1,662,500.- respectedly.

So the rates Miss Velazquez offered are the best discounted rates. However, you can get better rates than she offered if you buy the hotel voucher from Kaha Tour & Travel. Last month I was able to stay at their Deluxe Room at IDR 565,000.- net (single with breakfast and welcome drink).

BTW, please mind that this is a hotel with 5-star room facilities but with 3-star room size. You can hardly walk inside the room. I felt like a bird in a cage and can’t imagine if there were 2 birds then :) When the next day I moved to Travellers Suite and stayed at an one-bed-room apartment which are 4-5 times larger, I really felt like escaped from a jail.

Except the restaurant (Swiss Cafe), everything of this hotel is small. Small, room, small lobby, small lounge, small swimming pool (without lockers). So actually this hotel doesn’t deserve five star. I was lured to stay at this hotel when I visited their site which states there is a roof top restaurant called The Edge. However, when I went to the top floor, I was surprised to see bags of cement were scattered here and there and the restaurant was still under construction.

The other commercial of this hotel is that it links to a mall called Cambridge Mall. When I went there, I noticed about 75% of the mall was still empty. The only place worth to visit in the mall is Brastagi Supermarket. Well, there are several restaurants too but if go to the mall for shopping, forget it.

The only good things during my stay in the hotel were good breakfast in a nice place (Swiss Cafe) and friendly hotel staffs. I got a nice desk calender from a male staff at reception when I checked out.

  11. Matthew on March 10th, 2009 3:17 am

Thanks for the comments Kenji. I stayed a couple of times at the Aryaduta, which has a slightly better mall (and restaurants) underneath. The rooms there are ok sized (a little small), it looks like you need to go to the Superior category to get the better room at Grand Swiss.

I think this hotel will have to discount more to compete.

Not so long ago the choices in Medan were weak. As you say Travellers Suite is large, but obviously more expensive (1 million?), and you had various old hotels like Danau Toba, Novotel, and the Grand Angkasa, badly located. Now the Marriott and Aryaduta are here,Grand Swiss Bel is clearly third choice.

  12. Medan Indonesia on March 10th, 2009 9:55 am

    Hi Kenji, Matthew,

You are right, Swiss Bel and Aryaduta are both located in/adjacent to shopping mall.

Grand Swiss Belhotel is next (direct connection) to Cambridge City Square, Aryaduta is above Grand Palladium Mall. There are plus and minus points for the 2 shopping malls.

    Cambridge City Square:
It is true that shops at Cambridge City Square is not fully opened. It is a more upscale “city square” instead of a mall as Kenji explained. Most of the restaurants in basement and ground floor are opened such as Starbucks, Haggen Dazs, JCO Donuts, Dante Coffee, BreadTalk, Jitlada Thai, CupnCino, Jing Resto, Fountain etc including MyLife Gym & Spa, supermarket, Hair Salon, Kids Entertainment & Sports Shop (to be open).

    Grand Palladium Mall
Aryaduta is right above the Grand Palladium Mall. This mall is more of a electronic center although it has more tenants such as Department Store, Hypermarket, Cinema, Gramedia Bookstore etc.

I gonna stay here for 3 days in November 2009. Just ordered from AirAsia-goholiday. For me key question is: What earthquake can the building endure? I just hope nobody thought out to steal cement from cement-sand mortar?

  19. Jamz on October 26th, 2009 1:54 pm

My family have a plan to stay there for 4 days in November 2009. Is the hotel suitable for toddlers? I mean, like the swimming pool, food and safety. Thanks

  20. carol on October 30th, 2009 1:56 pm

can this hotel accommodate 4 adults in a room? or anyone can adv which hotel room is big enought to accommodate 4 adults. I need extra bed.

  21. Kenji on November 2nd, 2009 4:08 pm

    Jamz:

The swimming pool is certainly unsafe for small children (the condition I stayed at that hotel in February 2009). No hotel staff was guarding the pool. No lockers to keep your dress, wallet etc. Besides, the hotel rooms are small. Too packed if toddlers are stayed together with their parent in one room.

  22. Kenji on November 2nd, 2009 4:15 pm

    Carol:

4 adults in one room? NO WAY! In February this year, I stayed alone in its Deluxe Room and I could hardly walk inside the room. Maybe you need to stay in its Suite Room or President Suite if you want to stay 4 persons in one room. This is the WORST 5-star hotel I have ever stayed.

  23. matthew on January 13th, 2010 1:38 pm

It seems from the Grand Swiss Bel Hotel website that their rooftop restaurant is still not open. Same with the ‘View Lounge’

They are not I think a serious competitor in the top Medan hotel market.

    ????????GOOD
