After successfully serving the people of Medan for more than a year, the popular Sushi Tei restaurant ( a franchise from Singapore Sushi Tei ) has opened another branch in Sun Plaza located at lower ground near the drop off point and parking lot. This is their third branch after opening their second in Sydney last year! Yes, Sydney - Australia!

The Childrens Paradise in Medan - Star Kidz at lower ground Sun Plaza in Medan. So if you are ever in Medan and want to spoil your kids.  This is the place to go. There are two other playland at Sun Plaza Medan including one from Amazon Family Entertainment at the top level. But Star Kidz is the recommended place to go. It is the ONLY three level PlayLand in Medan for children to explore their creativity and imagination. And especially if you have children under 2 years old,  the area is open plan giving you a good view hence it is easy for you to keep an eye on your kids and making sure they are safe in there.

Star Kidz charges is Rp15.000 for 30 minutes in the playland, be sure to bring socks with you to enter the playland. If you forgot them, there is also no excuse for you as you can purchase them at the counter.

Apart from the PlayLand, it features the only LEGO stand alone store in Medan (for now) with a complete range of LEGO toys ( a second store will open in Cambridge Mall soon ). Evening Concert with Dr. Thomas Hecht in Medan City

Thomas Hecht is Head of Piano Studies, Associate Professor, Piano at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore (NUS).

As described by Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music American pianist Thomas Hecht has appeared on five continents as soloist, chamber musician and as a member of the internationally acclaimed duo-piano team of Hecht & Shapiro, winners of the Munich International Two Piano Competition and the USA National Duo Piano Competition.  He has performed in many of the world’s cultural centres, appearing with leading orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Stuttgart Symphony Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Orchestra, Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, Belgrade String Orchestra and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Highlights of recent tours include performances at the Lincoln Center in New York, the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington, recitals in Korea, Taiwan, Italy, South Africa, Romania, Serbia & Montenegro, and concerts throughout all the major centres of Australia and New Zealand.

Thomas Hecht is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory where he won first prize in the concerto competition and the Kaufmann Award for excellence in chamber music.  He later pursued graduate studies with the legendary pianist Leon Fleisher at the Peabody Institute, and became the first pianist to be appointed as Fleisher’s teaching assistant. His achievements were recently celebrated at Peabody where he was presented with the coveted Young Maestro Award,honouring alumni who have distinguished themselves in their performing careers.

Dr. Hecht enjoys a well-deserved reputation as one of the leading teachers of his generation, having produced a multitude of young prizewinners in competitions throughout the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.  He has served on the jury panels of the Geneva and Gina Bachauer International Piano Competitions in addition to the national piano competitions of Japan, Thailand, Australia and South Africa. He receives regular invitations to summer piano festivals, including performances in Sydney, Beijing, Wellington and Brasov (where he was recently named Honorary Professor of Piano at the University of Transylvania), and continues to be in frequent demand for guest lectures, workshops and music conferences throughout the world.

The Four denominations and notes are Rp10.000 that was issued in 1998 with the face of Pahlawan Nasional Cut Nyak Dhien, Rp20.000 issued in 1998 with face of Pahlawan Nasional Ki Hajar Dewantara, Rp50.000 issued in 1999 with face of Pahlawan Nasional WR Soepratman and Rp100.000 notes issued in 1999 with the face of Pahlawan Proklamator Dr.Ir.Soekarno and Dr. H. Mohammad Hatta made with polymer.

Here is the picture of the four Indonesia currency notes that will be retrieved from circulation:

“With the retrieval of these rupiah notes from circulation as of 31 December 2008, these notes will not be accepted as payment (legal tender),” Deputi Gubernur BI, S Budi Rochadi.

However, these notes are still accepted at Bank Indonesia and local Banks and can be exchanged for new notes of the same denomination or other smaller denominations. Local Banks will accept these notes until 30 December 2013 or 5 (five) years from now. As for Bank Indonesia, the notes can be exchanged for newer notes until 30 December 2018 or for 10 (years) from now.

“Bank Indonesia regularly retrieve old notes from circulation as these notes has been circulated for a long period of time and the conditions can be poor. Other reasons for this is to anticipate and follow new technologies in security features of currency notes”

Money changers overseas may still carry these old notes hence we share this information with you here so the public including travelers can be aware of which rupiah notes are legal tender and will be aware when exchanging currencies with money changers overseas.

If you are in Medan, then its time for you to go shopping and spend all your old rupiah notes before 31 December 2008!

Sometimes, you get funny emails in your inbox and this is one we received today.

The email is really for the Chinese in Medan as many of the terms are not only written in Bahasa Indonesia but also in “Hokkien” a Chinese Dialect widely spoken by the Chinese Community in Medan.

The email explains that “You Might be a Medan Lang (”Lang” means “People/Citizen” in Hokkien) if these are your daily life.

Yes, Medan Lang = Chinese Medanese

I will try to translate the terms below. The first version is the original version for “Medan Lang”. The second version, is a translated version if you want to know what constitute a Medan Lang

Original Version: For Medan Lang Only:

You might be Medan Lang if:

• You carry handphone to pasar and call your neighbour ‘kha me lai la, kia jit e kangkung ane phi lo‘
• You manage to buy expensive stuff to show you are rich.
• You think durian is your life.
• You take a becak just go to nia ang pau.
• You send your kids to US just for gengsi..
• You go to a park and drink ‘liang teh‘ instead of kue ci seng.
• You travel Medan-Penang more than 3 times a month.
• You mix pisang and huan cu at the same time and you call it kolak.

• You call your friends in jakarta ‘pa sia khiau seng‘

Afgan Syah Reza is a newcomer in the music industry of Indonesia with releasing his debut album CONFESSION NO.1 on Januari 2008.

His music are derived from pop, soul, R&B dan jazz, the album was produced with contributions from famous musicians from Indonesia such as Fajar LMN, Harry Budiman (producer Tangga), Deddy Dhukun, Dian HP and Bebi Romeo as composer.

K-One Live Concert in Medan 01 January 2009

As a new group singer, they already made 3 albums in the same year the group were formed. Their first album released was known as “We ‘r K-One”

Apart from having good vocals, K-One is also famous for their fabulous dancing, TV presenter and as actors in Taiwanese drama, such as :” Prince turn to Frog”, “Smile Pasta”,”Lu Guang Sen Lin”, and still a lot more.

The name of K-One means fight beyond limits.

K-One was recording under the same studio with 5566 & 183 club.

“Zhi jing zhi dian” was released in 2004 and the album became the best seller soundtrack album with 150.000pcs sold.
