Earthquake Gempa Sumut 8.6 SR?

Earthquake in North Sumatra not clarrified

Tonight, we have received many messages from SMS mobile phones and BlackBerry messengers from concerned friends about an after quake (earthquake) of 8.6SR in Sumatra Utara tonight and it claimed to be the source from BMG now BMKG - Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi dan Geofisika Indonesia.

So we went to check on BMKG official website to check on this to make sure if this news is true just to ensure everyone a peace of mind and good sleep for the night.

Sure enough, there is no such warnings or news on the claimed after quake. You can see all the recent earthquakes ( 60 recent earthquakes with magnitude over 5.0SR) in Indonesia in the earthquake / Gempa Bumi page.

Detiknews reported a confirmation from Head of Balai Besar II BMKG, Mr Suhardjono that although every part of Indonesia has a risk of earthquakes and after shocks, there will not be any after quakes of more than 8 SR. The expected quakes will be around 4.5 SR in Jawa Barat, Selat Sunda and Ujung Kulon.

He further added that the safest place away from earthquake in Indonesia is Kalimantan.
