Durian - The Either you LOVE it or HATE it thorny fruit from Asia is also a popular fruit in Medan. I still remember watching a “weired food around the world” television series in Travel & Living about this adventurous chef eating food like scorpions, worms, brains and other gross body parts of animals and when faced Durian, he cant take it!
Anyway, when Durian season comes, you will see the street filled with Durian Stalls where Medanese will seat by the street to eat Durians.
Well, now you dont need to wait anymore as we now have Durian Pancake in Medan all year round. Making Durian into pancake is very convenient and it has now become Medan’s favourite food like the Bika Ambon, Kue Bolu and Marquisa Juice Visitors are now buying them as souveniers for their friends and relatives. I wonder if they are allowed up the flights
Here are the durian pancake from Kedai Tiramisu, the picture does not do justice
Anyway, if you are a Durian lover, then it is definitely a MUST eat in Medan. You can get good ones at “Kedai Tiramisu”. They have a kiosk at Sun Plaza top level near to the Food Court or Jl. S Parman near those Bika Ambon streets. Durian Pancake goes for Rp10.000 a piece at time of writing. Also if you are dining in Taipan Chinese Restaurant, they do serve Durian Pancakes for dessert for about Rp15.000/piece.
