Durian in Medan

DURIAN…

‘Smell like Hell, taste like Heaven..’ Martin Yan

Indonesia, being the largest Durian consumption in the world,

…and it should be noted that the best place to have and to experience it all is right here in Medan where this King of all fruits are available all year round and is among the cheapest in Indonesia too!

Due to its strong pungent smell, the Durian are often ban from hotels, restaurants and public places in many countries and not sold in major supermarkets.  Thus it is often only found along the roadside.

In Medan, walk along Jl. Adam Malik, near to Gatot Subroto and you will see stretches of Durian stalls perched up along the street available from mid afternoon till late in the evening.

The King of Fruit… delicious but awfully stinky…

Here are some awesome tips on how to choose great durians.

  • Make sure the fruits are unopened before taking a close whiff. The good ones usually emanate an extremely strong pungent scent.
  • Shake the fruits gently. If you hear the sounds of something soft thudding against something soft that sound like “gloog, gloog gloog”, change are, the durians are ripe.
  • Sweep your nails against the surface of the durians skin and listen for a hollow sound.
  • Durians do not necessarily have to be heavy to be tasty. The smaller, lighter ones could be equally as good as those with thick pulp.
  • If the vendors make the effort to prise the durians open for you, select the ones that have the wrinkled layer of skin on the pulp.
  • To prise open a durian, look for its opening point that resembles a pathway or a visible line amongst the durian’s thorns that will begin from the bottom of the fruit. The line is usually visible when you see two rows of thorns growing towards one another.
  • Make a small incision in the centre-most point at the bottom of the fruits with knife. Twisting the knife around will help you find that opening point.
  • To get rid of the pungent durian scent in your car or house, simply place charcoal or slices of bread at selected locations. Within a day or two, the smell should be gone.

However, to guarantee the best durian to savor, simply let the ‘tukang durian’ (durian seller) do the choosing for you.  Many times, the tukang durian do let the consumer taste the fruit before purchase by cutting a small opening.  Should the customer not like how it tastes, another will be given.   An average piece of durian costs about Rp 15.000 (USD 1.50) and you can either enjoy it on spot or simply have it packed in the standard plastic box (tupperware) made readily available to purchase for packing.

Wow ,durian, I love it .How can I choose not to go Medan when you show me these pictures …my relatives drove me 2 hours plus from Medan town just to taste it during my last trip because I said that I must taste it before I leave.Hehehe I won’t say how it taste because if everyone started to love it,then I may have difficulty finding durian the next time….I heard that their most preferred durian are those from that don’t know what hill…I forgotten ,any Medanese can tell me?(Ssh….tell me only)
Your tips on how to choose durians is very useful .
But some says the fruits are very heaty and must not over consume.
And there is a way to cool down after eating it by using………Would you like to share how you do it in Medan to see whether we use the same tactic to cool down after eating?

LOL agongkia, come back to Medan anytime for Medan Durian :-)

Yes, Durian is an extremely “heaty” known as the “Yang” fruit and should not over consume. The recommended way to balance out is by taking mangosteen which is supposed to be the fruit that belongs to the “Ying” family…

and of course, the best way is still yet by drinking lots of water.

The traditional method by the locals…. :-)
Fill the husk of the durian with water and add salt to it, then drink the salt water directly from the husk. Tastes like salty Durian :-)
Remember to make sure the husk you use is freshly opened and clean if you want to attempt doing it.

    What’s your way?

Thank you for inviting and sharing.
I do it that way too and just want to confirm whether I am using the same traditional method with the Medanese.
I love your contribution.Keep up with your good work.

I love durian, in fact it’s my favorite fruit. I don’t care if my hubby says it’s stink.
I love the taste and the smell, I can’t help it. But here, in US I can only buy frozen durian from Asian Store, the taste not to bad and mostly they sell munthong.
The thing is, I have to eat it the day before the waste truck comes to pick up the trash. If not, the whole neighborhood will be mad at me, and I can get sued ha..ha..ha..
Thank you for sharing the pictures.
