CordLife Singapore opens Branch Office in Medan
CordLife collects, processes and stores cord blood stem cells, which may later become potential source material for life saving treatments.
How Stem Cells Used in Medicines
Cord blood stem cells are primarily used in transplant medicine to regenerate a patient’s blood and immune system, after they have been damaged due to a disease or medical treatments such as chemo or radiation therapy. Upon transplantation, the stem cells migrate to the bone marrow and reproduce, thereby regenerating and boosting the blood and immune system.
If an individual has a disease, the stem cells should contain the same genetic defect. Is there any use in transplanting the faulty stem cells?
Cancers are the result of multi-events, and are not caused solely by an inherent genetic defect. As such, an autologous stem cell transplant can successfully treat the disease. For the case of diseases caused solely by a genetic defect, the stem cell from the patient would carry the defective gene. However preliminary results using single gene defect rectification has shown the ability to correct even inherent disorders.
Storing Baby’s Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cells
Stem cells from the umbilical cord blood are being used to create the major components of the blood and immune system. More recently, it has been demonstrated that these stem cells can differentiate into other cell types. To date, cord blood has been used in transplant medicine for over 80 diseases and for over 8,000 transplants. Harvesting your baby’s umbilical cord blood stem cells can only be done once; at the point of birth, and enables you to store potentially life-saving material.
Treatable Diseases
To date, more than 80 diseases can be treated using Haematopoietic Stem Cell (HSC) transplants.
These include blood and metabolic disorders, immunodeficiency ailments and autoimmune diseases. Furthermore, with rapid advancements in technology, new applications for HSCs are constantly arising.
With growing awareness, more families are choosing to store their babies’ umbilical cord blood for future medical treatments. This is because umbilical cord blood transplants are recognised as the most efficient and effective method of stem cell therapy.
Here is a list of some of the diseases which have been treated successfully by a stem cell transplant.

Headquartered in Singapore, CordLife has been providing quality and reliable service to its customers in different countries throughout the region since its incorporation in May 2001.
The laboratory in Singapore, where CordLife stores clients cord blood units, is the first and only AABB accredited private cord blood banking facility in South and Southeast Asia. CordLife is also licensed by the Ministry of Health in Singapore.
As a company with strong values and integrity, CordLife set high standards for processing and storing cord blood stem cells. Its banking activities have always been focused around umbilical cord blood stem cells. With stem cell research and development progressing rapidly, this is expected to expand to include other sources of adult stem cells, such as adipose tissue and mesenchymal stem cells. CordLife has already begun preliminary studies and is in the progress of establishing international strategic alliances in these areas.
