Duck Bihun A Popular Breakfast Choice in Medan

Here’s one of the popular Duck Vermicelli Noodle in Medan. Locally known as “Ak Bihun” you can find the shop house / coffee shop selling this noodle in a small street near the city center of Medan at Jalan Perniagaan (a few shops from the popular Mie Hock Seng). The Ak Bihun is popular to local Medanese who frequent this kopitiam for a quick breakfast.

Duck Bihun at this little outlet has slightly thicker soup base compared to several other ones around Medan. Portions served come in 2 different serving sizes, the standard at Rp 34.000 and the extra large at Rp 38.000. Regardless of which you choose to have, each individual bowl is filled with minced crispy garlic, plenty of duck meat with the soup served on the side. At the price you are paying here, it is considered one of the most expensive kopitiam noodle stall in Medan.

Miesop and bakso Pak H Siran at Jalan Hang Tuah Medan. Located near to SMU Methodist 1 Medan or Kampus Methodist Medan which has been opened since 1974. Always packed with hungry Medanese so its not difficult to spot it!

Especially at lunch time, the warung bakso and mie Pak H Siran is packed. Each portion costs Rp 20 .000. and will fill you up nicely. For the light eater or those on diet, half portion Bakso is also available at Rp15.000.

What’s Special about Mie Bakso Pak H Siran?

Agnes, a customer admits that the bakso served by Pak H Siran is truly amazing, tasty and the beef smells nice.

Ibu Hj. Jumiiran revealed that the speciality of the their Bakso is in the special recipe passed down by the family of Alm H Siran. “The meat is boiled for 2 hours to make sure it is not hard”

According to Hj. Jumiran, they are able to sell about 300 bowls of Mie Sop Bakso daily consuming 100 kg of beef and 40 kg noodles.

Medan is very popular for food especially its wide range of Chinese noodles, here we introduce you to Bak Mie Hock Seng.

Known among the local Chinese Community as the local most expensive coffee shop noodles, Mie Hock Seng is a must try for noodles lovers or individual looking for the true local specialty. The store has been around since 1932, with over 70 years of family recipes, this is one of the few that is hard to find in this metropolitan town.

Serve with seafood, fish balls, pork in kwetiau (rice noodles) or egg noddles or you can specify a mixture of both! There are two types of noodles serve, the standard (biasa) or special with more ingredients. Make sure you specify which one you would prefer on ordering, or you will be served the special at Rp38.000 per bowl.

Not cheap for coffee shop standard, but shop is still filled with people.

Head down for breakfast, Brunch or a quick Lunch, with The coffee corner served the traditional style Coffee (kopi) as well as Tea that compliment the meal extremely well. Traditionally rich milk coffee and milk tea is a local favorite.

Medan has many unique street food operated by individual owners with their own shop which are usually Shop Houses also known as RUKO (Rumah Toko). They may not look glamorous but are definitely tasty and yearned for by many local Medanese who moved away from Medan.

Here we will show some of the most popular street food in Medan.

Bak Mie Khek

Bak Mie Kek, also known as Kek Mie in Medan, is noodle from the Hakka Chinese otherwise known as Khe Cia or Khek, served simply with pork and fried fatty pork, the noodle is delicious!

What is even more unique about this noodle is that the store is only open in the morning 6am to 12pm as it is considered a breakfast noodle. This noodle shop will then sell another type of noodle after 12pm.

Located in the popular food street of Medan known as Jl. Selat Panjang, it is in the part of Medan China Town. Not many food stalls are open in the morning here but the street is filled with all kinds of food by night. Jl. Selat Panjang is also a very popular food street for local Chinese food.

Medan’s Popular Rice Noodle at Selat Panjang

If you are Medanese, I am sure you must have tasted this Char Kwe Tiao at Selat Panjang by the 88 year old man.

Everytime we pass the stall, we always wonder why this old man is still selling Kwe Tiao at his age. It must be his hobby! He has been selling it for more than 50 years.

food rice noodles”>He makes his own rice noodles with pure rice flour unlike others who buy the rice noodles from the market. The rice noodle does taste different and have a different texture to it. The stall is small with only 4 tables and 12 chairs.

Apparently as I read from a food blog by Andie, this old man likes to travel hence his stall is open only half the time, so it is not easy get hold of this Rice Noodle. So the next time you pass by Selat Panjang and see his stall open, you might want to stop by and have a bite. Be warned though, you may not even get a seat and might just have to take away your rice noodle.

Medan Must Eat Street Food

I just found this blog Eating Asia about one of the best street food in Medan – The Nasi Gurih similar to Nasi Lemak in Malaysia

The author, a traveler to Medan highly recommend the food and took some great pictures. Well you can see 2 of the pictures here. Can you imagine street food in a tent can look so good? and best of all taste so good? With such high recommendation by the author, if you have a good stomach, it is definitely a MUST eat in Medan. I must say, the pictures really look so good, it makes me hungry I bet the author is a good photographer too!

You can find “Lontong Nasi Gurih – Tenda Biru Glugur” at Jl. Yos Sudarso – Glugur area heading for P.Brayan. The word “Tenda Biru” literally means “Blue Tent” so watch out for this blue tent!
