Here’s one of our favorite dessert at the Trattoria Cucina Italina Restaurant in Medan at Jl Uskup Agung Sujiopranoto No.19 Medan

Our tip:
Order in advance of your meal as it will take at least 15mins to prepare this dessert. When ordering request the delizia not to be too cooked so that the chocolate will flow (molten) out making it even more delicious

You may choose to have vanilla or chocolate gelato to go with your Delizia.

Food choices here though are limited but is enough to satisfy everyone I am sure. Like many cafe around town, menus often come as a one plate meal like Nasi Uduk, Nasi Goreng, Kwe Tiaw Goreng etc .

We also love the dessert Es Teler which is crushed ice like es cendol but served with coconut milk, avocado and jackfruits! A cooling dessert to finish off the meal. We can’t wait to dip our spoon into it hence didn’t get a chance to capture the picture for you

With the simple one dish concept, it’s a good choice, should you want a quick inexpensive lunch or casual dinner works just fine as well.

Duck Bihun A Popular Breakfast Choice in Medan

Here’s one of the popular Duck Vermicelli Noodle in Medan. Locally known as “Ak Bihun” you can find the shop house / coffee shop selling this noodle in a small street near the city center of Medan at Jalan Perniagaan (a few shops from the popular Mie Hock Seng). The Ak Bihun is popular to local Medanese who frequent this kopitiam for a quick breakfast.

Duck Bihun at this little outlet has slightly thicker soup base compared to several other ones around Medan.  Portions served come in 2 different serving sizes, the standard at Rp 34.000 and the extra large at Rp 38.000.  Regardless of which you choose to have, each individual bowl is filled with minced crispy garlic, plenty of duck meat with the soup served on the side.  At the price you are paying here, it is considered one of the most expensive kopitiam noodle stall in Medan.

There are two other popular Ak Bihun noodle stall in Medan which we will cover in time to come. For now, if you fancy a bowl of Duck Bihun, try this one out.

Tabo Bah Batak Grill

Here’s another popular place for those in search of the popular Batak Food known as Saksang Babi in Medan.

Located at komplek Multatuli Blok D No.48-49 Medan. Tabo Bah serves 2 types of food. Not the most common combination of dishes in many restaurants, this simple eating house serves Batak Grill and Chinese Porridge!

The Batak Babi Saksang is probably the most popular dish including other pork dishes such as grilled or fried pork.

However, for those not in favour of Batak food, the eating house has a wide range of dishes that are commonly served with the Chinese porridge. From a range of vegetables, fish, eggs, more kinds of pork.

Hence if you feel like eating porridge, Batak Grill is a good choice.

On Do Grill Batak

Mention the term ‘Batak’, you can be quite certain that Medanese will reply you with names of all the different mouth watering Batak restaurants located around Medan. With that I am quite sure some are now wondering what exactly is Batak food? How’s the taste? What sort of ingredients are use?

Well, let’s us just take a look at the photos we have taken on our recent trip to restaurant ‘On Do Grill Batak’ at Jl. Pabrik Tenun No. 45.

The eating house serves mainly pork dishes, from barbeque pork to fried pork. The popular dish is known as “saksang” pork cooked in the signature Batak Saksang gravy.

If Pork is not your choice of meat especially those fatty juicy kind, the Saksang is also served with Chicken.

As for pricing, it’s well reasonable but do be well prepare with tissue in hand to absorb the perspiration that comes along at this diner place.

skip Nasi Goreng, go for Sup Buntut

Oxtail Soup commonly known as Sup Buntut is a popular local dish served at Western Cafe and Restaurants in Medan

Traditionally, “ox tail” is boiled and served in the soup with carrots and potatoes and served chillies and “empeng” a local fried cracker.

Nowadays, sup buntut is now served fried “goreng” or barbeque “panggang” with sweet gravy souce serving with a bowl of oxtail soup.

You will find Sup Buntut in most western style cafe and restaurants in Medan as it has become a popular local dish alongside with Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Popular Fried Rice) or Mie Goreng!

Chewing the tail of an Ox may sound yucky but it actually taste yummy as you bite into the tender soft meat of oxtail.

Some popular western restaurants in Medan serving Oxtail Soup are Gelato, Bel Mondo Cafe, SunShine Cafe in Sun Plaza. Even the Singapore franchise Bakerzin Restaurant serves the Sup Buntut!

Personally, we prefer either the fried oxtail or barbeque oxtail.

So next time when you are in Medan and is brought to a western restaurant, skip ordering the Nasi Goreng and opt for the Sup Buntut instead
