    find it really interesting where I can browse any of my own hometown’s
    information. I am coming home pretty soon. it’d be really great to see

    Really appreciate this site as I have been to Medan four
    times already. My daughter has lived in Medan for 5 years, married a
    native Indonesian and we have one grandson. They are coming to Canada
    now but of course, all of us will be going back to Medan to visit my
    son-in-laws family. This site will be a real blessing to him while he
    is living in Canada. What a perfect place for him to keep in touch
    with his home city and country.

    * wishing a good health,
    * introductory word,
    * good morning/afternoon /evening,
    * welcome/goodbye.

    10 useful tips / advice for anyone who plan to go to Medan, Indonesia

    1) Outside Medan airport ( 2 minutes walk) , you can take ‘becak’ (3 tyres-motor) to get cheapest travelling cost to Medan town. Taxi wil cost you about USD30. But you can get Becak as low as USD1!! Never talk or negotiate with taxi driver at airport if you really don’t want them or they will follow you everywhere till you agreed.

    2) Always negotiate and firm the price prior with the driver before you take any public transport (taxi, unregistered car (kereta sapu), tuk-tuk or becak). Make sure he give the total cost for all heads including baggage (if have)

    3) If you interested to buy anything at any shops always bargain for the lowest price. But make sure once the price is agreed, you buy it.

    4) Never ever ask for price / bargain good that you actually don’t want or buy it because once U ask for the price, they like to force you to buy it. Sometimes they will scold or angry with you. If they ask you to buy something or give them some money for foods, just ignore them.

    5) If you want to go to Lake Toba, the lowest cost but guarantee your comfortness for 5 hours travelling) is to take Innova which cost you about USD10 perhead or USD 60 for 1 car (USD10x6 heads).

    6) Rupiah money is also confusing because of the so many “0″ and color which is not too different. You might give IDR1000000 instead of IDR100000 because so many “0″ and color also looks quite same. Better read the words, not the numbers. BTW, may sure you now the rate value in you currency home.

    7) At the Medan airport, never use the third party guys (normally they don’t wear uniform but wear a tag) to do the check-in registration in behalf you. They will ask you for some money (which is a lot and nonsense!!) after everything settled. Better you be in airport, just about 90 minutes to 60 minutes before the departure time. Too early or too late will give you trouble.

    8) Start March 2011, every person need to pay IDR75000 (about USD8) for Medan airport tax! So make sure you have prepared the money (IDR notes). There is a another counter to pay for it (pay by yourself) after you check it at airlines counter.

    9) Be careful everytime. Though Medan’s people is quite friendly and always want to help, it is normally not free. It is ok if you give them some tips, but if they fix you the price which is nonsense, do not afraid to express your objection. Go everywhere in group (at least 4 peoples with mens) for safety precaution.

    10) My last but not least, a simple advice, if you want something, do the talk first. If you don’t want, just walk out and shut up!

    Hi all,
    I am looking for the contact and address of the Hainan Clan Association (????) or its equivalent in Medan, as an effort to locate my grandfather’s burial site who passed away and was buried in Medan sometime in 1951. My grandfather was an immigrant from China in the 40′s who first moved to Lhoksemawe and Medan back then. Hope someone can help here. Thank you.
