On 11 January 2009, The New York Times published a list of 44 destinations, places to go in 2009!
There are many countries listed in the 44 places including popular Asian countries like India, Phillipines, Phuket Thailand apart from other European countries. What strike us was to see Penang Malaysia as one of the 44 Places to Go in 2009!
Penang was voted as the 22nd Places to Go Recommended by New York Times and the 2nd Place to Go out of the 44 Recommended by Readers of the New York Times!

This is very surprising since Penang is a very small island city of Malaysia, 45 minutes by plane from Medan! Penang is a very popular destination for Medanese due to its geographic location. 45 minutes ride in a plane, Free from Fiskal payment, a cheaper alternative to Singapore for shopping and medical treatments.
Furthermore, Penang speaks Bahasa Melayu similar to Bahasa Indonesia and the Chinese in Penang speak similar Chinese Hokkien dialect with the Chinese in Medan.
We hope Medan or Lake Toba will one day be featured as one of the popular destinations of the world just like Penang has become. If Penang can do it, Medan can too!
